Criminal Procedure under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita: A Textbook from Investigation to Appeal is the first comprehensive student treatise on India’s new criminal procedure code, which came into force on 1 July 2024. Written for LLB students and judiciary aspirants, the book traces, across nine chapters and 246 pages, the full procedural arc of a criminal case — FIR, investigation, arrest, bail, cognizance, trial, appeal, reference, revision, and the miscellaneous procedures of inquest, maintenance, limitation and disposal of property. Each chapter offers a CrPC-to-BNSS mapping table, a leading-cases box, worked illustrations and practice questions. Over 155 verified Supreme Court and High Court decisions are discussed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Nidhi Saroj is an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, IILM University, Gurugram. She has nearly eight years of teaching experience in criminal procedure, criminal law and allied subjects, with prior appointments at Christ University (Bengaluru), REVA University (Bengaluru), CMR University (Bengaluru) and Nirma University (Ahmedabad). Her teaching covers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law and is shaped by a close engagement with the procedural problems that arise daily in Indian criminal courts.

Dr. Saroj's academic interests lie at the intersection of criminal procedure, constitutional protections of personal liberty, and the comparative reform of common-law criminal codes. Her research has examined the constitutional and procedural foundations of arrest and bail, the institutional design of the office of the Public Prosecutor, the law of cognizance, and — most recently — the procedural innovations of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, on which this book is based. She has presented at national and international seminars on these themes and has supervised dissertations on procedural questions arising under the new Sanhita.

The present volume is the product of years of classroom teaching and the questions and difficulties of generations of her students. It is, in her own words from the Preface, "deliberately for the student."
